Here with Connections, we would like to give something to everyone. We want it to be a work of the readers, so remember to keep an
open mind and jump in with your own submissions to Connections.
Take some time and find an inspiration , today!
Then share who you’ve found
And go on your own personal journey to find your gifts and strengths. There are many inspirational people and teachers introduced and you should be able to find something that resonates with you.
Each month we will share with you stories, and information on the individuals that have set their sights on inspiring!
the people just like us, who have lost their physical sight, but, not their vision. that keep us going and growing as not only blind and visually impaired individuals,
but also as able and active individuals.
Please send information on these individuals that you know of, so we can share them here or tell us about yourself and why you are such an inspiration!
As before mentioned in Connections, often it helps to find an inspiration to get us past difficult challenges. Sometimes this is someone who seems to surpass all possibilities and yet is known to be just an ordinary person like you or me.
Inspiration comes from many different places, and reaches from all walks of life. One might become inspired just by attending an event, hearing a song, or hearing bits of conversations. This was the case for Joyce Kane, President of the NFB Krafters Division, for the National Federation of the Blind. (NFB
)
12 years ago, Joyce lost her vision, due to open-heart bypass surgery. Kane worked two jobs, while her children attended college. A year after surgery, and with time on her hands, Joyce decided to pick up her knitting needles and next was her sewing machine. "I pulled out my old Feather weight sewing machine that was as basic as you can get, just straight stitching, and played with it. I loved sewing, and for 8 years worked the craft shows making dolls while my kids were young and growing up," Joyce explains.
"I wanted to start with something I was very familiar with."
After attending the NFB convention two years ago, Kane was inspired to create a division, where blind people can come together, to share creative ideas, and tips on the art of craft.
Joyce contacted the head quarters of the NFB located in Baltimore Maryland, and the rest is history. A month after returning from Georgia the Krafters Korner list was started on the NFB’s official website. In one year, people took interest, and joined the mailing list. With Guidance from Joann Wilson, the first meeting was held in Dallas Texas, to finalize details on a constitution and vote in officers for the division.
Within the next year, classes were developed. All classes are taught by blind Krafters, to folks who were interested in learning. The classes are conducted by conference calling. Classes include jewelry beading projects, beginners, and advance knitting, Origami, Fun Making soap, Beaded Snowflakes, sewing Machine Discussion, with tricks and tools used by other blind folks, etc.
Upcoming classes such as coil basket weaving, how to read knitting patterns, basic hand sewing skills, more jewelry beading, and Origami classes, will be offered.
A mini craft show was held in Detroit at this year‘s Convention, where Krafters displayed, and sold their creative, talented work. The NFB Krafters division has also gone internationally, where Krafters from other countries, join via Skypes.
A weekly conference call is held on Monday nights at 8 P.N. Eastern Time. You can join in by calling
610-404-9100 and the code number is 2 7 2 3 8.
There are no limitations, when it comes to blindness. Talent comes upon anyone, regardless, of disability.
This month’s belly laugh is inspired by a fun story I have. Once in a hard time in my life, I was given a special gift by someone who cared about me. She gave me a little stuffed animal which was a turtle. When you squeezed the turtle’s belly, a little child’s giggle came out. It never failed to make me laugh. I later, had another friend in my life going through a very difficult time. I in turn passed that turtle on which also never failed to make her laugh. She in turn has passed that giggling turtle on to someone else.
I thought if I could pass the same giggle on to all of you, someone might be able to use it. Don't forget to pass it along. smile

I’ve received many notes and calls from those enjoying Connections. I’ve also gotten quite a few interesting things about and for the blind, which I always try to include. And I’ve even gotten yet, a few more letters from readers that seemed to want to reprimand me about some of the changes that have taken place. I say only that Connections has become a stockpile of what you, the readers are submitting. That is what I wished it to be. If you don’t contribute, you won’t get what you want and you’ll be stuck with the way that things are getting’ done. smile
The past 18 months of editing Connections has been such a wonderful experience. I’m just loving my work . I’m meeting all kinds of interesting people and learning new things every day. It has been a great blessing how life has changed.
Just in the last 15 months, I also met an incredible partner and now, fiancée and am planning to move to England in February.
Connection’s office is being moved and publication will go on as usual.
We wish many more of you to send in your contributions so Connections can be a real place to Connect with what you want and need.
Also remember to send your links of the sites you most visit so they can be added to EverythingBlind.com. There have been several new additions and I have a whole list of new sites, yet to be added. So, if you haven’t visited in a while check it out!

Looking for help in finding a particular individual
I am in Macedonia. 10 years ago, I studied in the U.S. After coming home, I was in contact with a particular blind individual who was helping me acquire some information about university scholarships for international students. I got his address from Labina and Teona Mitevski, two Macedonian sisters involved with Macedonian movie production, and I believe they got to know about him by a common friend of theirs called Goran. I believe that this blind individual was either English or American and I believe he is in his 30s now. He studied at Oxford 10 years or more ago and that he was pursuing a very unusual degree in history or architecture. If he is reading this magazine, or if anyone thinks they know him, please contact me. I would really like to get back in touch with him.

Subject: Zip lock baggie fly control
Worth trying when you are in a fly infested area or on a picnic.
Love the fact that we aren't spraying chemicals to kill the bugs and
us
FYI
We went with some out of town friends to Sweety Pies on Sunday for
breakfast, and we sat in the enclosed patio section beside the house.
We happened to notice a couple of zip lock baggies pinned to a post
and a wall. The bags were half filled with water, each contained 4 pennies, and they were zipped shut. Naturally we were curious! Ms Sweety told us that these baggies kept the flies away! Sonaturally we were even more curious! We actually watched some flies come in the open window, stand around on the window sill, and then fly out again. And there were no flies in the eating area!
This morning I checked this out on Googgle.
Below are comments on this fly control idea. I'm now a believer! More
Zip-lock water bags
Sue says:
Many people swear that a zip-lock bag filled half-way with water and
attached over entry-ways will repel flies. No one yet knows how or
why it works, but there is speculation that it has something to do with the way the moving water refracts light. If you have tried this please use the comments form at the bottom of the page to share your results with the rest of us.

I did tried the ziplock bag and pennies this weekend. I have a horse
trailer with full LQ. The flys were very bad this weekend while I was
camping. I put the baggie with pennies above the door of the LQ. NOT
ONE
FLY came in the trailer. The horse trailer part had many. Not sure
why
it
works but it does!!!!!!!

Fill a ziplock bag with water and 5 or 6 pennies and hang it in the
problem area. In my case it was a particular window in my home. It had a slight but significant passage way for insects.Every since I have
done that, it has kept flies and wasps away. Some say, that wasps and
flies mistake the bag for some sort of other insect nest and are threatened by this.

I swear by the plastic bag of water trick I have them on side porch (
our house entry) and all around the basement door. We saw these in
Northeast Mo at an Amish grocery store & have used them since. They say it works because a fly sees a reflection & won't come around.
Just DJ Says:

Regarding the science behind zip log bags of water? My research found
that each of the millions of molecules of water presents its own
prism
effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a
zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a
dizzying
manner. When you figure that flies are basically prey for many other
bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being
around that much perceived action. I moved to a rural area ant
thought
these "hillbillies" were just yanking my city boy chain but I tried
it,
worked immediately! We went from hundreds of flies to seeing the
occasional one, but he don't hang around long.

1. When sending an ad by email, please place a before and after your ad in the message. This will ensure that only the ad itself is
included in Connections. If you have a personal phone number or email address in your signature you do not wish to share with the

3. When contacting Connections please make a note in the subject line pertaining to your inquiry or submission. This will ensure that
your message is not deleted as spam.
Submissions
1. Contest submissions should be no longer than 700 words.
2. When submitting literary pieces, please keep in mind that the readership of Connections is world wide and general in nature.
Please, no adult or explicit material.
3. Please send your submission in the body of an email, along with the attached document, preferably in Microsoft Word format.
Double spacing is not necessary.
4. Please be aware that in print, there are two spaces between sentences. This is because print is much smaller than Braille and
therefore needs the extra space for ease in reading.
Submit Your Literary Work To Connections!
Do you write poetry? How about short stories or articles on varying subjects of general interest? Do Do you travel to out of the way
places? Do you enjoy writing jokes and humorous pieces? Many small publishers cannot pay large sums of money, and some do not pay
at all, but this doesn't make them less useful to begin building up your portfolio of published works. When the time comes to submit your
piece for paid publication, you'll have lots of clips from various publications to present to editors.
Connections is one of those small non paying publications at the moment. The copyright remains your own, so you can publish any of
your works elsewhere. I am especially interested in blind and visually impaired writers, but not exclusively. I hope to hear from
you soon.
