And now October's issue! Enjoy!

Here with Connections, we would like to give something to everyone. We want it to be a work of the readers, so remember to keep an open mind and jump in with your own submissions to Connections.

Everyone must find their own path and way and make their own decisions in what to believe and it is very important that a variety of views are considered in this world.

If everyone could all wish to help those less fortunate or wise in life, and To help mentor and support someone that needs what they have, well, then, it would be a pretty nice world, wouldn’t it.

This is particularly true in the world of blind and visually impaired individuals.

I, myself had a very difficult time in finding understanding and inspiring individuals to whom I could look for support in the gradual occurrence of my blindness.

Even worse, I have met individuals that lose their sight instantaneously in their life and they find themselves lost in the system.

What You Can Expect

Each month we will share with you stories, poems, and essays on principles which keep us going and growing as both blind and visually impaired individuals, but also as able and active individuals.

Send your stories, poems, essays, and lessons about vital principles which you have found to be helpful in your success or failure in life.

This month’s principle is willingness

Are you still having problems finding that true peace and happiness we all feel we deserve? Where do you think the problem lies. This is the key in the principle of willingness.

We have touched on the first 5 principles in the past issues and found that we must first of all, have complete honesty in facing our problems and where to place the blame for them.

Through the rest of the principles, we have found that we must realize that relying only on ourselves does not usually work. We must have found faith in some other power or person and find the ability to ask for help.

Willingness is the step where we learn to pray or meditate to a higher power to help us to remove character defects that we have identified with the principle of integrity.

This depends on our understanding of the principle of faith, where we must release our will to some higher power.

This does not have to be a god or diety or even a person, but it must be something besides ourselves.

This is very difficult to adhere to consistently and if you have not begun to do so, or have not the willingness to do so, I would suggest you might resubscribe to the Classifieds Only edition of Connections. This being because you are not looking for what we have to offer here.

It suggests that you may not need to change a thing about yourself or you are not willing to.

This is fine, but, if you do find the wish to make some changes, read on with an open mind.

This is the most difficult part in writing this newsletter, as I never wish to impose my own beliefs on others or at all suggest that their own beliefs might be wrong. All I wish to do here is to present what I have found to work in my own rehabilitation and learning how to become at peace and very happy in my life.

I am still begging for input from you, the readers, to add to what I am presenting.

How often have you tried to make changes using your own will power? How many New Year's resolutions have you actually stuck to and been able to make changes in yourself without help?

It is a proven fact that asking for help and support in any defect you may have, greatly increases your chance of success.

Anyone who has used the help of a higher power to achieve success in their dreams, if done sincerely and persistently, has a 100% success rate.

It will never fail if you completely give up your will from your ego and hand it over to this power.

Again, this higher power can be anything you wish, but, it can not be you.

Kathy L. Bella writes about the principle of willingness and her own higher power at:

Kathy L. Bella

And remember you do not have to be an addict or alcoholic to learn something from those who have overcome these problems.

" ... {I} decided that maybe I didn’t hate all of my defects. Maybe some of them should stay with me because they served a purpose. I could totally get rid of being dishonest but it wouldn’t hurt to hold on to control, would it? There are defects that caused problems and there are defects that are pleasurable. We get something out of them. They may even be admired by others.

Everyone has defects but our defects as addicts go beyond the norm. We are grateful that we have been able to identify them so being entirely ready to have God remove these defects seems like a fairly large order. Who will we be? Will we change? Will we appear weak to others? Will we appear too righteous?

I don’t think that we have to worry too much because we will always have some defects. Having no defects would mean perfection and I believe I can say with 100% accuracy that that will not happen!

Defects don’t just disappear because we are ready. We have to be willing to have them removed and only praying to our Higher Power is going to make that happen. We cannot wish them away. True, some will be easy but the ones most engrained in our person, the ones that protected us from the real world, the ones that encouraged our addictions are the difficult ones. These are the demons who could lead us right back to the insane existence from which we finally emerged.

So how would I suggest someone do Step 6? I would follow the Big Book first and examine the first five steps. I would then review my defects in private to God and name them. “God, I am ready for you to remove the defect of ______.” I wouldn’t throw all of my defects into a pile and try to hand them over. Be aware of the defects you have asked God to remove and when one of them rears its ugly little head (and some definitely will), you can recognize that as something that you need to work on and/or maybe realize you are holding on to it.

Today I recognize my defects and am more willing to have them removed even though I know I hold on to a few of them like best friends. I have to continue to pray for willingness. One of the things that work for me is that instead of focusing on a defect, I try to focus on a positive. For example, instead of thinking about how not to be selfish, I try to think about how to be more giving or of more service. This is strong, positive reinforcement for me and it is coming from within with the help of my Higher Power.

Like any of the steps in recovery, this one cannot be done alone. You don’t need another person but you do need your Higher Power and remember it is a process. It is a life-long process that requires willingness. The end result will certainly not be perfection but I have to believe that there will be a reward of inner peace and happiness. And isn’t that all we’ve ever really wanted?

Here, if you are cringing at the mention of the reference to God, or to the 12 step recovery program, I must apologize for my imposition that you may be willing to need or believe in such a thing.

You never need to call it God. Call it Spirit, Allah, or whatever you wish. I, myself, call God the truth. It keeps it simple and offends fewer than the usual reference.

Don't call it anything, if you want, and in this case, again, I suggest you leave us and subscribe to the Classifieds Only edition of Connections and continue on with what works for you.

It is always wise to consider others views and beliefs and be willing to maybe change some of our own views, if we find others’ views, at least, possible?

Trusting Yourself

The one thing I know about my source is that I can not possibly really understand it. I simply have to trust in what I have experienced and in the results it has given me.

For me to honestly know willingness was to completely and honestly realize that what I was doing on my own was not working

I had to become willing to give my power over to something or someone else.

It turned out to be Quite simple, when practiced, diligently and with sincere effort.

True willingness requires us to be honest and admit that our ego still can show its ugly head in almost every part of our life.

Be willing to always go back to the first principle of honesty and be willing to admit that we may be wrong in some way.

Ten Principles

There are 10 common and basic principles which can be studied one by one and our understanding of them will change as we progress toward an awakening in our spirit. This most often happens automatically once the principles are rightly understood for what they are.

The 10 principles which I have learned about and still learn about every day, are as follows:

1 honesty
2 hope
3 faith
4 courage
5 integrity
6 willingness
7 humility
8 brotherly love
9 self discipline
10 perseverance.

These principles may differ slightly from program to program throughout the world, be it a Native American 12-step program, Christian, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters anonymous, Sex addicts Anonymous, and etc. but basically, if you can find 10 principles that fit what you need, you will inevitably progress to a higher understanding about your life and find why you might be missing out on the joy and wonder of the world, blind or sighted.

Please contribute

Please contribute what you can in teaching and helping others with your example.

Instructions are found below to submit your stories about some of these principles in life.

The Rewards

Once these principles are learned and begun to be practiced, daily, the 11th and 12th, those being conscious contact with a higher power and then love and service, just magically appear. The simple acts of kindness spontaneously start to happen, on both sides of the card. Suddenly, people reach out with love and acceptance and even if they occasionally, don't, we still find love for those souls who have not yet begun to find it. Our understanding of others grows and our feelings of continuous hope and love shine forth from our hearts. Before we know it, we are people whom even ourselves love, unconditionally.

The Sixth Principle

This month I am sharing some of my own insight about the sixth principle of willingness with which we can learn a new way to think about who we are and how to better ourselves.

If we understand the principle of honesty and that being 100% honest *all* of the time is essential to our best interest, well, we must admit that finding willingness is easy.

Just like integrity was, to have willingness is a choice to make.

It's a simple choice you get to make whether to hold on to your own pride and ego, or to let it go and be willing to change.

How willing are you to do whatever it takes to achieve what you want?

Everyone has there own path, remember…

If we become inspired by a higher purpose, it becomes so much easier.

A simple choice.

Surrender and give it a try.

Surrendering takes humility.

Tune in next month for some insightful ways to view what humility really could be.

Insight On Perception

If we went by what our eyes could see Well, often the truth would be eluding us.

For those without eyes, it's how you perceive things ...

“. We can learn how we are blinded by deceptions of our mind.

The following was written by Bill Urell.

"The principles of the
12 steps
can be very difficult or very simple to understand. This is an effort to simplify the meaning of the principles of the 12 steps for those who may be having difficulty. These are the principles that are incorporated into our daily lives as 'we walk the walk'. Employing each of these behaviors will help to rebuild a life of increased self esteem and self confidence. So, in my never ending quest to keep it simple, here are the action principles behind steps toward {spiritual awakening}...

6. Willingness - Now that we have accomplished an inventory of the good and no so good aspects of our character and behavior, are we willing to change them? All of them? The important part in this 12 step principle is the willingness to let go of old behaviors.
More about the rest of the principles can be found at The Principles Behind The 12 Steps Of Addiction Recovery

The principle of willingness pertains to our ability to give up that which does not work.

The misconception about this is that because you have willingness to notice your own character defects, does not mean it is easy to remove them.

Willingness is simply a catalyst through which your action will make things happen.

It will allow you to face underlying fears which keep you from taking action.

Anything you get, takes work and sometimes hard work.

To expect something for nothing is simply not realistic.

I mean that we must each and every one of us do our best each and every day and keep on doing it on each new day that arrives.

This is not ever as hard as it seems.

Meeting Goals

Most days I wake up feeling graciously bountiful and then I keep picturing where I'm to be in the whole vision of my life, and the next thing falls into place. Right in my lap.

When I lose sight of what I must do to keep those things, they begin to slip away.

It has been a very powerful and extremely wonderful experience, thus far.

Make up your mind how much of your sorrow and worry and bad luck is of your own choice.

How willing are you to do anything it takes to achieve your goals and dreams? Then decide what you can do to make it happen by changing what you have been doing that doesn't work.

If you need help, find it. It's all around. just look at the truth.

Take part in the worldwide phenomenon that is Texas Hold'em. Real opponents, virtual tables, fake chips, full of excitement, thrills and fun. All inPlay is proud to bring you the world's first ever fully accessible online Texas Hold'em game, for you and your friends to play together as equals.

Please read about some great news for the blind at Money For The Blindd

WASHINGTON (AP) — When the next generations of $5, $10, $20 and $50 bills roll off the presses, there should be some way for blind people to tell them apart,

a federal judge said Thursday.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson said he would not allow the Treasury Department to go at its own pace as it complies with a May ruling that U.S. paper money discriminates against the blind.

Treasury officials have hired a contractor to investigate ways to help the blind differentiate between bills, perhaps by printing different sizes or including raised numbers.

Government attorneys urged the judge to let that process play out and not interfere with anti-counterfeiting redesigns that are already in process.

Robertson was not persuaded. "The Treasury Department is not going to just conduct this on its own schedule and its own terms. Let that be clear," he said.

Robertson ordered attorneys for the government to meet with the American Council of the Blind, which brought the lawsuit, and come up with a schedule that requires changes in the next generation of bills.

The next $100 design could be printed as early as this fall and Robertson said those bills won't be affected. But subsequent designs should be able to solve the problem, the judge said.

Government lawyers said they plan to argue that Robertson does not have the authority to interfere with the Treasury's printing responsibilities.

The judge said he'd consider the argument but quipped that, if he didn't have authority to require changes, how was he supposed to enforce the ruling? What would the court order say, he asked, "Go out and have a good time? We'll see you when it's all over?"

Ever been interested in Amateur radio?

Handiham Needs your help.

We really need to recruit new people into amateur radio.

With a resource like radio camp and the Handiham program,

people with disabilities can be on an equal footing in licensing classes and become part of our wonderful amateur radio service.

amateur radio. In order to help you out, we have a free DVD about our program that you can request and use to help spread the word.

But wait, folks, that's not all!

Radio campers who pass their first license exam and earn their Technician at Minnesota Radio Camp will be rewarded with a new 2 m handheld radio to get them started off right in amateur radio. How about that?

Campers come from anywhere and everywhere. At the last Minnesota camp we even had a Handiham member from Germany.

For people with disabilities, there is often a concern about meeting personal-care needs while away from home. Rest assured that we are equipped to handle these needs so that campers can enjoy what they really came to camp for: a wonderful ham radio experience in a safe, comfortable environment.

The most frequent concern we hear about from people who have not attended the radio camp in the past is that they don't think they can travel.

However, campers who make the trip learn that we will be waiting for them at the airport or bus station nearby camp and that there was never anything to worry about in the first place.

Once a person has attended camp, they often get home and immediately mark their calendar so that they don't miss the next year's camp.

2. When submitting literary pieces, please keep in mind that the readership of Connections is world wide and general in nature. Please, no adult or explicit material.

3. Please send your submission in the body of an email, along with the attached document, preferably in Microsoft Word format. Double spacing is not necessary.

Submit Your Literary Work To Connections!

Do you write poetry? How about short stories or articles on varying subjects of general interest? Do

Do you travel to out of the way places? Do you enjoy writing jokes and humorous pieces? Many small publishers cannot pay large sums of money, and some do not pay at all, but this doesn't make them less useful to begin building up your portfolio of published works. When the time comes to submit your piece for paid publication, you'll have lots of clips from various publications to present to editors.

Connections is one of those small non paying publications at the moment. The copyright remains your own, so you can publish any of your works elsewhere. I am especially interested in blind and visually impaired writers, but not exclusively. I hope to hear from you soon.
