And now December's issue! Enjoy!

Here with Connections, we would like to give something to everyone. We want it to be a work of the readers, so remember to keep an open mind and jump in with your own submissions to Connections.

Everyone must find their own path and way and make their own decisions in what to believe and it is very important that a variety of views are considered in this world.

If everyone could all wish to help those less fortunate or wise in life, and To help mentor and support someone that needs what they have, well, then, it would be a pretty nice world, wouldn’t it?

This is particularly true in the world of blind and visually impaired individuals.

Take some time and help another, today!

What You Can Expect

Each month we will share with you stories, poems, and essays on principles which keep us going and growing as both blind and visually impaired individuals, but also as able and active individuals.

Send your stories, poems, essays, and lessons about vital principles which you have found to be helpful in your success or failure in life.

This month’s principle is Brotherly Love

Are you still having problems finding that true peace and happiness we all feel we deserve? Where do you think the problem lies. This is the key in the principle of Brotherly Love.

We have touched on the first six principles in the past issues and found that we must first of all, have complete honesty in facing our problems and where to place the blame for them.

Through the rest of the principles, we have found that we must realize that relying only on ourselves does not usually work. We must have found faith in some other power or person or thing and find the ability to ask for help.

Then we have also learned how to look at our own shortcomings when it comes to finding the blame for most of our problems and also how to pray to have these shortcomings removed.

Brotherly love is the step where we begin to wish to find forgiveness in every part of our life. It is where we have accepted forgiveness and wish to begin to make amends to those we have hurt and ask to be forgiven.

I am still begging for input from you, the readers, to add to what I am presenting.

This month has no winner,

as, again, there were no submissions. I have, therefore, chosen one of my favorite teachers to share with you how to better understand this principle of brotherly love or forgiveness and why we should learn what it is. smile

Thic Nat Hahn is a Buddhist monk who has helped many learn about and achieve enlightenment

and peace in their lives.

The following passage is from pages 121 to 124 in his book Peace Is Every Step, which can be found at Audible:

Call Me by My True Names

In Plum Village, where I live in France, we receive many letters from the refugee camps in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines, hundreds each week. It is very painful to read them, but we have to do it, we have to be in con-tact.

We try our best to help, but the suffering is enormous, and sometimes we are discouraged. It is said that half the boat people die in the ocean. Only half arrive at the shores in Southeast Asia, and even then they may not be safe. There are many young girls, boat people, who are raped by sea pirates. Even though the United Nations and many countries try to help the government of Thailand prevent that kind of piracy, sea pirates continue to inflict much suffering on the ref- ugees.

One day we received a letter telling us about a young girl on a small boat who was raped by a Thai pirate. She was only twelve, and she jumped into the ocean and drowned herself.

When you first learn of something like that, you get angry at the pirate. You naturally take the side of the girl. As you look more deeply you will see it differently. If you take the side of the little girl, then it is easy. You only have to take a gun and shoot the pirate. But we cannot do that. In my meditation I saw that if I had been born in the village of the pirate and raised in the same conditions as he was, there is a great likelihood that I would be- come a pirate. I saw that many babies are born along the Gulf of Siam, hundreds every day, and if we educators, social workers, politicians, and others do not do something about the situation, in twenty-five years a number of them will become sea pirates. That is certain. If you or I were born today in those fishing villages, we may become sea pirates in twenty-five years.

If you take a gun and shoot the pirate, you shoot all of us, because all of us are to some extent responsible for this state of affairs. After a long meditation, I wrote this poem. In it, there are three people: the twelve-year-old girl, the pirate, and me. Can we look at each other and recognize ourselves in each other ?

The title of the poem is Please Call Me by My True Names," because I have so many names. When I hear one of these names, I have to say, Yes."

Do not say that I'll depart tomorrow because even today I still arrive.

Look deeply: I arrive in every second to be a bud on a spring branch, to be a tiny bird, with wings still fragile, learning to sing in my new nest, to be a caterpillar in the heart of a flowers, to be a jewel hiding itself in a stone.

I’ll still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry, in order to fear and to hope.

The rhythm of my heart is the birth and death of all that are alive.

I am the mayfly metamorphosing on the surface of the river and I am the bird which, when spring comes, arrives in time to eat the mayfly. I am the frog swimming happily in the clear pond, and I am also the grass-snake who, approaching in silence, feeds itself on the frog.

I am the child in Uganda, all skin and bones, my legs as thin as bamboo sticks, and I am the arms merchant, selling deadly weapons to Uganda.

I am the twelve-year -old girl, refugee on a small boat, who throws herself into the ocean after being raped by a sea pirate, and I am the pirate, my heart not yet capable of seeing and loving.

I am a member of the politburo, with plenty of power in my hands, and I am the man who has to pay his "debt of blood" to my people, dying slowly in a forced labor camp.

My joy is like spring, so warm it makes flowers bloom in all walks of life.

My pain is like a river of tears, so full it fills the four oceans.

Please call me by my true names, so I can hear all my cries and laughs at once, so I can see that my joy and pain are one.

Please call me by my true names, so I can wake up, and so the door of my heart can be left open,

the door of compassion.”

In beginning to wish to make amends to others, we are learning how to find the love that this pirate does not yet know.

When we look at the wrongs we have done, we often also justify our deeds by possibly blaming another person for hurting us first.

Learning forgiveness can help us to overlook such things and allow us to be the better person by beginning a reconciliation.

It is a very difficult thing to put our pride aside and admit our own wrongs, especially if others wrongs seem worse.

The thing to remember is that there are no degrees of wrong. Wrong is wrong and as always, two of them don’t make a right. Only amending our own wrong will make a right.

The tool which any 12 step program uses to learn this principle is to make a list of any and all people whom we have hurt in our lifetime and become willing to make amends to them, wherever possible.

Remember to always refer to the first principle of honesty and include all wrongs … even those that may seem justified.

It is always wise to consider others views and beliefs and be willing to maybe change some of our own views, if we find others’ views, at least, possible?

Trusting Yourself

The one thing I know about my source is that I can not possibly really understand it. I simply have to trust in what I have experienced and in the results it has given me.

For me to honestly know brotherly love was to completely and honestly realize that any wrong I had done must be rectified in order for me to free myself from guilt and let’s say, bad Karma.

Even if I wasn’t always forgiven in a particular situation, at least I had tried to fix it and therefore was absolved.

In making amends, I also, often received an apology for, or at least recognition by the other person about their part in the problem. Not always, as a matter of fact, rarely, but, you would be surprised at how far a little bit of love and humility can go to soften others.

I had to humble myself to understand that I was no better than any other human being on this earth. To understand that I could never understand this without the help of my higher power of the truth to show me where I was erring.

Ten Principles

There are 10 common and basic principles which can be studied one by one and our understanding of them will change as we progress toward an awakening in our spirit. This most often happens automatically once the principles are rightly understood for what they are.

The 10 principles which I have learned about and still learn about every day, are as follows:

1 honesty
2 hope
3 faith
4 courage
5 integrity
6 willingness
7 humility
8 brotherly love
9 self discipline
10 perseverance.

These principles may differ slightly from program to program throughout the world, be it a Native American 12-step program, Christian, Narcotics Anonymous, Overeaters anonymous, Sex addicts Anonymous, and etc. but basically, if you can find 10 principles that fit what you need, you will inevitably progress to a higher understanding about your life and find why you might be missing out on the joy and wonder of the world, blind or sighted.

Please contribute

Please contribute what you can in teaching and helping others with your example.

Instructions are found below to submit your stories about some of these principles in life.

The Rewards

Once these principles are learned and begun to be practiced, daily, the 11th and 12th, those being conscious contact with a higher power and then love and service, just magically appear. The simple acts of kindness spontaneously start to happen, on both sides of the card. Suddenly, people reach out with love and acceptance and even if they occasionally, don't, we still find love for those souls who have not yet begun to find it. Our understanding of others grows and our feelings of continuous hope and love shine forth from our hearts. Before we know it, we are people whom even ourselves love, unconditionally.

The Eighth Principle

This month I am sharing some of my own insight about the eighth principle of brotherly love with which we can learn a new way to think about who we are and how to better ourselves.

If we understand the principle of honesty and that being 100% honest *all* of the time is essential to our best interest, well, we must admit that showing brotherly love is easy.

Just like humility was, to show brotherly love is a choice to make.

It's a simple choice you get to make whether to hold on to your own pride and ego, or to let it go and learn how to ask for forgiveness.

How willing are you to do whatever it takes to achieve what you want?

Everyone has there own path, remember…

If we become inspired by a higher purpose, it becomes so much easier.

A simple choice.

Surrender and give it a try.

Surrendering takes brotherly love.

Tune in next month for some insightful ways to learn how to find better self discipline.

Insight On Perception

If we went by what our eyes could see Well, often the truth would be eluding us.

For those without eyes, it's how you perceive things ...

“. We can learn how we are blinded by deceptions of our mind.

The following was written by Bill Urell.

"The principles of the
12 steps
can be very difficult or very simple to understand. This is an effort to simplify the meaning of the principles of the 12 steps for those who may be having difficulty. These are the principles that are incorporated into our daily lives as 'we walk the walk'. Employing each of these behaviors will help to rebuild a life of increased self esteem and self confidence. So, in my never ending quest to keep it simple, here are the action principles behind steps toward {spiritual awakening}...

Please be aware, that as mentioned, the principles vary among different 12 step programs and here we find a difference in where the 8th principle is listed as discipline and principle 9 is forgiveness.

The key is that the two principles work together and steps 8 and 9 are worked together to achieve both forgiveness and self discipline.

8. Discipline and Action - We are continuing to remove the barriers that can block forward sober growth. We are getting ready to sweep our side of the street clean. Make a list of all those people we have harmed both through actions and not being present to live up to obligations.

More about the rest of the principles can be found at The Principles Behind The 12 Steps Of Addiction Recovery

The principle of Brotherly Love pertains to our willingness to love and ask forgiveness.

The misconception about this is that because you have willingness to notice your own past wrongdoings, does not mean it is easy to amend them.

Asking forgiveness, even when we may also want to be asked for forgiveness in a particular situation will inevitably bring a feeling of relief and of love even if we do not receive our desired result.

Just try it. Pick someone from your list and make a phone call, today. You may be surprised at how you will feel when you are done.

With a little time, and a little more insight, we begin to see both ourselves and our enemies in humbler profiles. We are not really as innocent as we felt when we were first hurt. Not A Joke!! If you dislike attorneys You will love some of them for these tips.

Read this and make a copy for your files in case you need to refer to it someday.

Maybe we should all take some of his advice! A corporate attorney sent the following out to the employees in his company.

1. Do not sign the back of your credit cards. Instead, put Photo ID REQUIRED.

2. When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line. Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows the rest of the number, and anyone who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have access to it.

3. Put your work phone number on your checks instead of your home phone. If you have a P O Box use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a P O Box, use your work address. Never have your social security number printed on your checks. (DUH!) You can add it if it is necessary. But if you have It printed, anyone can get it.

4. Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine. Do both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel. Keep the photocopies in a safe place. I also carry a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad. We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed using your name, address, SSN, credit, etc. Unfortunately I (the author of this piece who happens to be an attorney) have firsthand knowledge, because my wallet was stolen last month and within a week the thieve(s) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change my driving record information online, and more. But here's some critical information to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:

5. We have been told we should cancel our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find them.

6. File a police report immediately in the jurisdiction where your credit cards, etc., were stolen. This proves to credit providers you were diligent, and this is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one). But here's what is perhaps most important of all: (I never even thought to do this.)

7. Call the 3 national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number.

I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name.

The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

By the time I was advised to do this, almost two weeks after the theft, all the damage had been done.

There are records of all the credit checks initiated by the thieves' purchases, none of which I knewanything about before placing the alert.

Since then, no additional damage has been done, and the thieves threw my wallet away this weekend (someone turned it in).

It seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks.

8. Now, here are the numbers you always need to contact about your wallet, if it has been stolen:

1.) Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

2.) Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742

3.) Trans Union : 1-800-680 7289

4.) Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

Here are a few guidelines to keep in mind when sending in your ads and literary pieces.

1. When sending an ad by email, please place a before and after your ad in the message. This will ensure that only the ad itself is included in Connections. 3. When contacting Connections please make a note in the subject line pertaining to your inquiry or submission. This will ensure that your message is not deleted as spam.

Submissions

1. Contest submissions should be no longer than 700 words.

2. When submitting literary pieces, please keep in mind that the readership of Connections is world wide and general in nature. Please, no adult or explicit material.

3. Please send your submission in the body of an email, along with the attached document, preferably in Microsoft Word format. Double spacing is not necessary.

4. Please be aware that in print, there are two spaces between sentences. This is because print is much smaller than Braille and therefore needs the extra space for ease in reading.

Submit Your Literary Work To Connections!

Do you write poetry? How about short stories or articles on varying subjects of general interest? Do

Do you travel to out of the way places? Do you enjoy writing jokes and humorous pieces? Many small publishers cannot pay large sums of money, and some do not pay at all, but this doesn't make them less useful to begin building up your portfolio of published works. When the time comes to submit your piece for paid publication, you'll have lots of clips from various publications to present to editors.

Connections is one of those small non paying publications at the moment. The copyright remains your own, so you can publish any of your works elsewhere. I am especially interested in blind and visually impaired writers, but not exclusively. I hope to hear from you soon.
