And now August's issue! Enjoy!

This Month’s Belly Laugh

Health Care Initiatives

Apparently the American Medical Association has weighed in on the new Health Care Initiatives from the Obama Administration ...

The Allergists voted to scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

The Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception.

Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.

Pathologists yelled, Over my dead body!

While the Pediatricians said, Oh, Grow up!

Oncologists fear it's malignant, while Osteopaths see it as holistic.

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.

Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.

The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, This puts a whole new face on the matter.

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.

The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the a**holes in Washington.

Quotes on CREATIVITY and INNOVATION

When all think alike, then no one is thinking.

— Walter Lippman

Capital isn't so important in business. Experience isn't so important. You can get both these things. What is important is ideas. If you have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn't any limit to what you can do with your business and your life.

— Harvey Firestone

Great is the human who has not lost his childlike heart.

— Mencius (Meng-Tse), 4th century BCE

Doing the same thing over and over, yet expecting different results, is the definition of crazy.

— Unknown

M. A. Rosanoff: Mr. Edison, please tell me what laboratory rules you want me to observe. Edison: There ain't no rules around here. We're trying to accomplish somep'n!

— Thomas Edison

Creativity, as has been said, consists largely of rearranging what we know in order to find out what we do not know. Hence, to think creatively, we must be able to look afresh at what we normally take for granted.

— George Kneller

It isn't the incompetent who destroy an organization. The incompetent never get in a position to destroy it. It is those who achieved something and want to rest upon their achievements who are forever clogging things up.

— F. M. Young

It's easy to come up with new ideas; the hard part is letting go of what worked for you two years ago, but will soon be out of date.

— Roger von Oech

We all operate in two contrasting modes, which might be called open and closed. The open mode is more relaxed, more receptive, more exploratory, more democratic, more playful and more humorous. The closed mode is the tighter, more rigid, more hierarchical, more tunnel-visioned. Most people, unfortunately spend most of their time in the closed mode. Not that the closed mode cannot be helpful. If you are leaping a ravine, the moment of takeoff is a bad time for considering alternative strategies. When you charge the enemy machine-gun post, don't waste energy trying to see the funny side of it. Do it in the closed mode. But the moment the action is over, try to return to the open mode—to open your mind again to all the feedback from our action that enables us to tell whether the action has been successful, or whether further action is need to improve on what we have done. In other words, we must return to the open mode, because in that mode we are the most aware, most receptive, most creative, and therefore at our most intelligent.

— John Cleese

The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.

— Dr. Linus Pauling

Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.

— Albert von Szent-Gyorgy

To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science.

— Albert Einstein

Without the playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt we owe to the play of imagination is incalculable.

— Carl Jung

When Alexander the Great visited Diogenes and asked whether he could do anything for the famed teacher, Diogenes replied: “Only stand out of my light.” Perhaps some day we shall know how to heighten creativity. Until then, one of the best things we can do for creative men and women is to stand out of their light.

— John W. Gardner

Looking for help in finding a particular individual

I am in Macedonia. 10 years ago, I studied in the U.S. After coming home, I was in contact with a particular blind individual who was helping me acquire some information about university scholarships for international students. I got his address from Labina and Teona Mitevski, two Macedonian sisters involved with Macedonian movie production, and I believe they got to know about him by a common friend of theirs called Goran. I believe that this blind individual was either English or American and I believe he is in his 30s now. He studied at Oxford 10 years or more ago and that he was pursuing a very unusual degree in history or architecture. If he is reading this magazine, or if anyone thinks they know him, please contact me. I would really like to get back in touch with him.

3. Please send your submission in the body of an email, along with the attached document, preferably in Microsoft Word format. Double spacing is not necessary.

Submit Your Literary Work To Connections!

Do you write poetry? How about short stories or articles on varying subjects of general interest? Do

Do you travel to out of the way places? Do you enjoy writing jokes and humorous pieces? Many small publishers cannot pay large sums of money, and some do not pay at all, but this doesn't make them less useful to begin building up your portfolio of published works. When the time comes to submit your piece for paid publication, you'll have lots of clips from various publications to present to editors.

Connections is one of those small non paying publications at the moment. The copyright remains your own, so you can publish any of your works elsewhere. I am especially interested in blind and visually impaired writers, but not exclusively. I hope to hear from you soon.
